Denmark: Health Aspects of Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields

A national program for research in non-ionizing radiation in the RF frequency - health effects, dosimetry and biological mechanisms.

Scope

• Epidemiological studies of brain tumour risk and mobile phone use.
• Investigation of factors that determine risk perception.
• Study of base station signals in healthy adults and adolescents.
• Examination of the effects of RF-exposure on biochemical reactions.
• Assessment of acute changes in cognitive performance from TETRA.
• PET study of the metabolic markers during phone use.
• Effects on neural development and mature brain cells.
• Study of effects on semen quality and reproductive hormones.

Status

There were calls for proposals in 2004 and 2005 with funds then allocated to projects. The results were presented at a workshop in May 2008. Overall, the program showed no significant health effects from mobile phone or base station radio signals. At present there are no plans for a follow-up program.
