GSMA RCS Project
Objectives
The GSMA RCS Project is a collaborative effort to speed up and facilitate the introduction of commercial IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based rich communication services over mobile networks for both UMTS and CDMA initially and later extending to fixed networks.
Within the project, the user interface or device implementation is not specified. The focus instead is upon the user experience, interconnection and interoperability requirements tied to a core feature set of rich communication capabilities.
Management
The GSMA's RCS Project is overseen by a Management Team consisting of representatives from the key stakeholder groups: operators and equipment vendors (handsets and infrastructure). The day-to-day business of the programme, depending upon its nature, is managed by either the RCS Technology Group or the RCS Business Group. Each group has a convenor responsible for coordinating its activities and reporting back to the Management Team on the progress of specific tasks. The GSMA supplies senior resources to project manage the overall programme.
Scope – Release 1
Carrying out the work in releases helps maintain the momentum of the programme and ensures that core deliverables are achieved in reasonable periods of time. Release 1 scope consists of a number of work items:
- Functional Description
- Technical Realisation
- OMA Endorsement
Release 1 documents are available for download from the Resources page of this site.
Interoperability Testing (IOT)
Formal Interoperability Trials to test a variety of Functional Use Cases as defined in Release 1 are carried out with increasing frequency, driven by the ever-growing number of companies from the network or handset industry.
The rigorous approach to testing is managed under the Technical group's scope of activities. Functional Use Cases and the User Experience are tested using many permutations of client, network and functionality – all to an agreed test specification. Test results are only circulated within the members of the GSMA RCS project.
